An attempt to ban single-use PVC packaging containers in California has failed for a second straight year.
The much-amended bill, introduced by Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, was moved to the inactive file Aug. 20, meaning there will no further action this year, but that the bill can be reconsidered in 2010.
The proposed ban, AB 1329, would have gone into effect July 1, 2014, and applied to both food and beverage containers, and consumer goods packaging, with the exception of packaging that contains medical devices, petroleum-based products, pharmaceuticals and containers that are used solely for transportation or to transport and protect building materials.
It had passed the Assembly by a 42-32 vote in June and been approved by the Senate Environmental Quality Committee 5-2 in July. |
